, we understand the importance of creating a welcoming, functional, and stylish outdoor area that can host anything from intimate family gatherings to lively summer parties. Here are some ideas and inspiration to help you design the perfect deck for entertaining.
    1.

          Incorporate Comfortable Seating

Comfortable seating is essential for any entertaining space. Consider a mix of seating options, such as cushioned chairs, benches, and even hammocks. Built-in seating along the perimeter of your deck can maximize space and provide plenty of room for guests to relax.

A dedicated dining area is a must for outdoor gatherings. Opt for a large dining table that can accommodate your typical guest count. For a more casual vibe, consider high-top tables or a picnic table setup. Ensure there's enough space for everyone to dine comfortably.

An outdoor kitchen or grill station makes hosting barbecues a breeze. Equip your deck with a quality grill, a prep counter, and storage for cooking utensils and supplies. A built-in bar area can also be a fantastic addition for serving drinks and snacks.

Easter Sunday occurs this year on April 12th. If
you are one of many families that celebrate by giving Easter Baskets to
children, you may be working on them now. Smaller kids are easy, as they tend
to get excited about any little snack or trinket that is offered to them.
However, if you have an older child or teen that you give an Easter basket to,
you may be struggling with ideas. Older children typically don’t have much use
for stuffed animals, bubbles, or Play-Doh. So, what can you get them without
going overboard?
                                          1.
Hat Basket – One popular idea is a hat basket.
Find a baseball style hat that they would like (a favorite sports team, a funny
saying, or something else they like), turn it upside-down and fill it with
their favorite treats. The hat won’t hold a lot, so no need to get much. Just a
couple favorite snacks, maybe a small gift card and call it good. Simple and
useful. Some hats will work better than others so double check that you will be
able to put what you need into it before purchasing.
                                          2.
Shower/Pamper Basket - If your teen or older
child isn’t into baseball hats, try a bag of shower goodies. Use a make-up or
shower bag as your “basket” and fill it with items they will use. Bath bombs,
lotions, shower shoes, and nail files are a few ideas.
                                          3.
Starbucks Basket/Cup - Another fun idea for a
teen who likes Starbucks is to get them a Starbucks thermos for their “basket”
and fill it with a Starbucks gift card and perhaps a small traditional Easter
treat.
                                          4.
Artist Basket – If you have an artsy teen or
child you can make them an art basket. Use a crate lined with fabric or felt
(to hold the supplies in it) and fill it with a few art items. Try blank
canvases, paints, brushes, molding clay, felt, decorative cutting scissors, or whatever
their art preferences are.
                                          5.
College basket – For a teen leaving for college
you can create a basket with college essentials. For a few ideas you can use
headphones/ear buds, a daily planner, USB flash drives, a reusable water
bottle, and don’t forget a gift that displays the logo for the college of their
choice (a keychain, hat, or coffee mug would work).
                                          6.
Fishing Basket – If you have a child who likes
to fish, you can use a tackle box or fishing net for your basket and fill it
with Easter treats and fishing gear. Swedish fish gummies, gummy worms, bug
spray, sun block, lures, and other fishing gear are a few ideas to get you
started.
These are just a few ideas for a teen or older child. There
are many other ideas to help you out. Pinterest is a good place to check if
none of these seem to work for your child. You can always keep it simple and do
a traditional basket with Easter treats and throw in a small gift card to their
favorite store. Happy Easter!

What is the difference between a pergola and a pagoda? The
names sound similar and they have similar functions. However, there are slight
differences between the two. As you begin your search for the perfect addition
to your outdoor space, you will find that there are many different options.
Some structures like enclosed porches provide a large amount of protection from
the elements, while others, such as open decks, provide almost none. Pergolas
and pagodas both fall in the middle in terms of protection.
A pergola is an architectural feature that can be an extension
of a house or a standalone feature. Pergolas are extremely open and often
feature climbing plants or curtains if more protection is desired. Pergolas have mostly open roofs and are usually square or
rectangular in shape. Pergolas can either be gathered under or serve as a
walk-through.
A pagoda on the other hand is almost always a standalone
feature. It is typically more rounded in shape. Rather than a square or a rectangle,
pagodas are usually octagonal, hexagonal, or pentagonal. Pagodas generally have
a southeast Asian style to them. Pagodas provide more protection as their roofs
are solid and are not typically intended as a pass-through.
Both pergolas and pagodas are attractive and functional
structures that can add value and enjoyment to your outdoor space. Because so many terms are used interchangeably
and their meanings change over time, it is best to find photos of structures
that you love prior to discussing your project with a professional.

New years eve traditions from around the world
We know New Year’s Eve for Times Square, the ball drop,
fireworks, champagne, and that new year’s kiss! Whether you prefer a night in
with family and close friends or a night out with a large group of strangers,
the traditions tend to be the same in the United States. However, other parts
of the world have other ways of bringing in the new year!
     Australia – In Australia,
the majority of the celebration occurs on January 1st, rather than New
Years Eve. Most Australians spend the entire day outside. The celebrate with picnics,
camping out, races, and carnivals.
China – The Chinese New Year does not fall on the same date
each year. Rather, it is celebrated during the 2nd new moon
following the winter solstice. The Chinese New Year is more of a spiritual
celebration than a holiday. For the Chinese, the new year is a chance at a new
life. Decorations are primarily red, as red is believed to represent luck. The
food that is served are all foods that represent prosperity or wealth. Some of
these foods include fish, dumplings and rice. Many will either attend or watch
the spring festival on television.
Mexico – The New Year in Mexico is also a cultural and spiritual
celebration. Many will either eat lentils, leave them outside their door, and
put a handful in their pockets because they are associated with good fortune.
Eating 12 grapes during the 60 second countdown is done so that the person may receive
their 12 wishes and good fortune. In Mexico you should plan to wear red underwear
and yellow pants to bring in a New Year of love & fortune.
Denmark – In Denmark it is customary to throw dishes at the
door of your loved ones to bring in the new year. If you have many broken
dishes to clean up, it is a sign that you have many friends. Additionally, many
will rather around the television to watch the Queen of Denmark give her annual
speech. Boiled cod, pork, and kale are customary foods.
However you choose to bring in the New Years, we wish you
all good luck and prosperity in 2020!

          An Extended Living-Space

Although a deck is not technically a “room” and does not
offer total enclosure, it still offers an extended living area. A deck is like
an outdoor room. You can add a seating area, dining area, light fixtures and
other comfort items. Your deck can act as a second living room or dining area
with the added benefit of being able to enjoy the outdoors.

          Return on Investment

A deck offers a GREAT return on investment in comparison
with other home improvement projects. According to the 2019 Cost vs. Value
report for Madison, a wood deck offers a 63% return and a maintenance free deck
offers a 60% return! This is about the same level of return that you would see
for a bathroom or kitchen remodel!

          Added Aesthetic Value

It goes hand in hand with your return on investment. A deck
will add aesthetic value to your home. There are so many different design
options when it comes to your new deck. You want to design something that will
compliment your home and be a focal point when in the backyard. A beautiful
home that stands out in a neighborhood is priceless!

          A Place to Entertain

Our homes can become a little crowded when having guests
over. A deck offers a perfect gathering place. It is close enough to the house
that guests can easily reach the bathroom, but keeps everyone from congregating
in the kitchen area, where you might need the extra space to prepare food for
your event. Guests can hang out on the deck or spread out in the yard for a
game of bags or to toss a football around.

          Storage

Depending on the layout of your deck, it may offer storage
area. Under your deck is the perfect place to keep things that you want out of
the yard area, but close enough that they can be accessed regularly. You may

If you find that you need more space at home, a deck is a
fairly quick solution. Other space-increasing projects such as room additions
or basement finishing, may take more time and planning. Although a deck does
require some planning, it is typically quicker than alternative projects.

Halloween is right around the corner. You may be starting to
think about stocking up for trick or treaters that will soon be knocking at
your door. The obvious go-to is candy. However, maybe you are hoping to hand
out something else this year. Too much candy can cause health problems in young
children. Additionally, some kids have food allergies which makes it impossible
to enjoy many of the treats that they receive on trick or treat night. Whatever
your reason is for looking for a candy-alternative, we have you covered. Here are
a few cost-effective ideas:
                                          -
                                          Bouncy Balls (eye-balls)
                                          -
                                          Ink Stamps
                                          -
                                          Key chain flashlights
                                          -
                                          Halloween-themed stickers
                                          -
                                          Bubbles
                                          -
                                          Halloween pens or pencils
                                          -

Most of these non-food items can
be purchased in packs online or at the dollar store for just pennies per item. Also,
some of these treats can be enjoyed while trick-or-treating. The flashlights,
glow sticks and whistles will add to the Halloween fun. Instead of being like
every other house on the block, consider handing out some non-food items to the
kids who stop by!

We love spending time out on our decks and patios when the weather is nice. Unfortunately, so do insects. Your idea of a good time outdoors probably doesn’t involve gnats flying up your nose, mosquitoes biting or flies swarming your food. Here are a few tips to keep some of the most common bugs away. 1) Keep your deck clean and free of food – Sweep off your deck regularly and do not leave food or drinks outside. 2) Install patio fans or bring a fan outdoors with you – Mosquitoes and flies don’t like windspeeds over 10 mph. A fan will increase movement enough to keep them away. 3) Avoid standing water - Mosquitoes and gnats breed in standing water. Keep gutters cleaned out. Empty buckets and other water sources when not in use. Avoid having a bird bath if possible. If a bird bath is a must-have for your yard, get one that has moving water to avoid the possibility of breeding. 4) Avoid using too much mulch - Roaches and ants love much! Instead, use an alternative such as rock or gravel. If you must use an organic mulch, keep it at least 12 inches away from your house and deck. 5) Avoid having a large, bare ground area – this invites yellow jackets to tunnel. 6) Mow regularly and avoid very tall grasses or weeds - Ticks and other insects love hiding in tall grass. 7) Use your garden to help repel undesirable insects - Basil and rosemary help to repel flies and mosquitoes. Lavender help with moths, fleas, flies & mosquitos. Check out this link for other plants that repel insects:

           8) Use fire to repel bugs - Flies will avoid extreme heat. Light a fire or use a propane fueled fire table to keep the flies away. Smoke is also a natural inspect repellent. You can add some of the same herbs from your garden to the fire for an added repellent. Lavender, sage, mint, and lemon balm are all great for adding. 9) Use citronella – candles, spray, and plants. Citronella is one of the most popular mosquito deterrents. It certainly won’t hurt to have some around. 10) Use neem oil on your plants – If you have plants on or near your deck area, spray them with a neem oil mix. Some flies and other insects will use your plants as a place to lay their eggs. Neem oil kills larvae and deters insects from coming back to lay.

Deals will begin making their appearance the weekend following
the 4th of July. The 4th of July marks the last major holiday when grills
are widely used. Of course, any grill master knows that there are plenty of
good grilling weeks left in the season. You will start seeing some sales during
this time. The discounts will start off small and increase as the summer grilling
season comes to an end.
You may choose not to head out this weekend to get small
discounts on grills. However, it is a good time to start shopping around. You
can check out reviews online, compare features, and keep an eye on what is left
in stock. Very popular models may sell out quickly. If there is a particular grill
that you MUST have, don’t wait until its completely sold out. You can ask a
store clerk how many of a certain model are left. Sometimes you can even see
how many are left at a store location by checking online.
Deep discounts on grills are usually offered beginning in
September when stores are eager to clear them out to replace the space with fall
& winter holiday items. Once September hits, the remaining grills tend to
clear out quickly. Floor models may also be sold at this time. Floor models
often get the regular sale price, plus an additional amount due to its time
spent out on the floor. Don’t be afraid to haggle on floor models – most stores
are able to offer larger discounts on these types of merchandise. However, be
sure to weigh the pros and cons of buying a floor model. Although the grills
were not actually used, they were viewed and touched by many customers. Check
that all parts are still intact, and no pieces are broken off. Floor models can
offer some of the greatest prices, but they typically cannot be returned so be
sure to examine them closely.
September is also a good time to purchase a used grill. Many
will sell their grills that they don’t plan to use the rest of the year because
they intend to buy a new one in the spring. Check fall yard sales and online
listings. As with the floor models, you will need to examine these grills
closely. Used grills require greater examination since they typically have been
used many times over.

March through June will be the worst time to purchase a
grill if you like a good deal. In March, stores are usually just beginning to
get their stock in so not many sales are offered. There may be a few decent
sales around Memorial Day. However, the absolute worst time to buy a grill is June.
Everyone wants their new grill in time for summer & 4th of July
grilling and the stores all know it. Prices tend to be the highest in the month
of June. Save yourself some money on your new grill, now is the time to start shopping
around!

Most of our customers purchase their brand-new deck because
they want to spend more time outdoors with family and friends. In addition to
choosing a deck that is safe, attractive, and functional, you also want to make
sure that your deck area is comfortable and inviting. Here are a few tips for
decorating your new outdoor space.

         – It may be tempting to buy brightly colored frames and cushions for
your outdoor furniture, but our advice is to look for colors that are neutral
(greys, tans, and browns are good options).
Color can be added with throw pillows and outdoor rugs. This makes your
outdoor space easier to change if you grow tired of the current decor.

         – An outdoor rug not only can
add a splash of color to your space, but it also offers an indoor feel outdoors,
which can make you and your guests feel more relaxed. Outdoor rugs are made of
material that more water-resistant. Natural fibers such
as Bamboo, sisal, hemp, jute, and seagrass are great options for outdoor rugs.

         – Many deck owners use
their deck and a second dining area, especially when food is cooked on the
grill. You will probably want to designate a space for eating. You could add an
outdoor table with chairs, or you could add a bar area. This will depend on how
many people will regularly be eating on your deck.

         – Most decks are
uncovered to that enjoyment of the sun and air flow is not restricted. However,
you will want to add a shaded area for when the sun becomes too bright and hot.
An umbrella over your outdoor table is a good idea. If you want a little more
shaded space, you could install a pergola with shear curtains, or purchase an
over-sized patio umbrella.

few finishing touches with a couple colorful pieces. Throw pillows, vases, end
tables, and decorative bowls are good ideas. Just remember whatever you put out
there will have to weather the wind and rain, unless you plan to bring the
pieces in when needed.

Pergolas are decorative archways that are common in parks
and along trails. Often you will find them over paved walkways or seating areas.
Sometimes you will find a smaller version of a pergola, called an arbor as an
entrance to a garden or intended as something to stand under during a wedding
or ceremony. Often the two words are used interchangeably. However, typically
arbors are intended as entrances or through-passes while pergolas are meant for
spending longer periods of time under.
Pergola’s are becoming more popular additions to residential
outdoor spaces. Pergolas are not enclosed so they are not intended to offer
much shelter from the elements. Instead they are intended to provide a
minimally sheltered and attractive area in your yard or on your deck area.
Pergolas are perfect for those who wish to enjoy the weather but still have a
designated and somewhat shaded area to relax under. Pergolas can be
free-standing or attached to a house. They can also be placed directly on a
deck or in a yard/paved area.
In a residential setting, pergolas are generally used for
some type of entertainment area. Often you will find them to contain a seating
area, hot tub, or bar area. Sometimes large pergolas are even installed over a
pool.
Customers often decorate their pergolas to provide a more
comfortable and attractive entertainment area. Some pergolas contain climbing
plants on the sides & top or shear curtains. Adding either one of these
coverings will provide some extra shade without sacrificing enjoyment of the
sun and airflow. You can also add other touches such as lighting or hanging
potted plants.

-Pergolas are estimated to offer around a 50% return on your
investment. This varies from area to area. Some areas can offer nearly a 70%
return on your investment. Depending on the size of the project and material
used, pergolas are generally more affordable than other similarly functioning
outdoor spaces such as gazebos.

         – If you
don’t already have a deck or patio, pergolas can help give a definite entertainment
area to your outdoor space. Sometimes it is unclear where in the yard that the seating
or entertaining should take place. A pergola offers this definition.

Outdoor plants need a balance of sun and shade to thrive. If your hard area is
very open, your plants may be subjected to too much sunlight. A pergola will offer
a little more balance for their growth.

Some would argue that more thought and planning will go into
designing an outdoor deck than a kitchen or bathroom remodel. There are a lot
of options available to you and you will need to take some time to consider on
the best options for YOU. First, you must establish your need for a deck and
what its primary function will be, next, establish a budget, then, select your
installer, and finally, decide on which material to use. Additionally, you may
need to plan for further options regarding your deck. This will include but is
not limited to, railings, built-in lighting, and landscaping.

          Establish your need
and use

         – what is the reason that you want a deck? This is important
because it will eventually guide you in choosing the best material and layout
for your deck. Is it going to be used for a pool surround? If so, you may want
the material used to be more slip-resistant and less sun-absorbent. Is it going
to used for entertaining? In this case, you may want to build your deck larger
to accommodate more people. Will it be used as a second dining area? There are
material options available that have an indoor look to them. This would give
your deck a comfortable feel and establish a great flow from indoor to outdoor.
There are a lot of different options that will depend on your future use of
your deck. Visualize yourself using the deck and express these uses during your
estimate so the best design can be created for your future deck.

          Establish a budget

         – This is a tough one if you have never had an estimate for a deck before (or
if it’s been many years). You don’t want to establish a budget just to find out
that your budget isn’t going to come close to what you need to build an
attractive, functional, and lasting deck for your home. You certainly will want
to consider your personal finances. However, you may want to get an estimate or
two in order to give yourself a good idea of what to expect and then narrow
down your budget to a number you are comfortable with. This will help you when
deciding how large to build your deck, what manufacturer to go with, or when
you are thinking about additional options. To give you a general idea,
according to the 2019 cost vs value report, the AVERAGE deck price in the
Madison area is $13,109 for a wood deck and $19,221 for a composite
(maintenance-free) deck. Understand that this price includes decks of all sizes
and decks built with materials from many different manufacturers. For a large deck built with premium
materials that include a long and inclusive warranty, you may be looking at a
much higher cost. However, it is good to note the average price for an average
deck in order to establish a general budget idea.

          Select your installer

         – You should receive estimates to establish costs, but more importantly, to
establish WHO you trust to build your deck. You should judge your choice based
upon their product knowledge – do they have a well-rounded knowledge of the
materials used, installation method, and manufacturer/workmanship warranties?
Their responsiveness - Do they respond to you in a timely manner and are they
listening to your needs? And finally, their previous customer testimonies –
look at reviews on Google, Facebook, or another platform. What do previous
customers have to say? This is important because it will give you insight into
the experiences of others who have used the professional. What potential
problems are highlighted in the reviews? Is this issue important to you? The
last thing you want is to have a deck built and need to fix or rebuild it
later, on your own dime.

         – Do you prefer a deck with little to no maintenance or a classic wood look? It
is possible for you to have both! There are so many manufacturers out there of
maintenance-free decks and each one has several different options within
options. Genuine wood decks are also a great option. This is where it is very
important to express your desires to your installer. What features are most
important to you within a product?

         – Once you design the basics of your
deck, you will need to decide on any other options that you might need.
Obviously, you will likely want railings. Do you prefer cable railings, wood,
PVC, or something else? Will you be adding any built-in lighting? If you plan
to use your deck late at night, you may want to consider this.
According to the 2019 cost vs. value report for the Madison
area, wood and composite decks are a great investment for your property with
63% and 61% of the costs being recouped respectively upon the sale of your
property. This is similar to the cost recouped for a bathroom or kitchen
remodel (65% and 63% respectively). We hope this short guide will help point
you in the right direction for building your brand-new deck and as always,

It is important not only to keep your gutters clean, but to
keep your downspouts cleared out as well. When water fills your gutters and it
has nowhere else to go, it can leak over causing problems to your roof, siding,
and foundation. It is essential to keep the downspout clear so that water can
be directed away from your home.
The task of clearing out your gutters will sometimes require
you to get onto your roof and use your hose, so you will want to wait to
complete this task when ice and freezing temperatures are no longer a major
threat. Late March or early April is a good time to get this done, once the
freezing temperatures have passed but before major rainfall.
Start with a sturdy extension ladder that is tall enough to
reach the roof of your home. You do not want to have to reach any more than
necessary in order to get onto the roof. The ladder should reach the edge of
the roof. You may also need a 2nd person to support the ladder and
assist with other tasks.
Before attempting to clear out the downspout, be sure that
the gutters are cleaned. Remove leaves and other debris. Although, more time
consuming, it is safer to move the ladder as you go rather than unclogging from
the roof itself which would require you to lean away from the roof, making
losing your balance more likely.
Once this task is complete, remove the horizontal extensions
from the down spouts. It will be easier to push debris out of the down spout
without the added directional issues.
Next, take the hose and place it at the opening of the first
down spout with a small towel wrapped around to hold in pressure. Have your
helper turn on the hose slowly to full force. You will know that the spout is
cleared when the debris spits out and the water runs freely. Run for a few
minutes to clear the remaining leaves.
For difficult clogs, you can use a plumbing snake to thread
it through and pull out clogs. You can then try the hose method again.
Before putting the extension pipes back on, be sure they are
cleared as well.
Now you have free and clear spouts, ready to take on the
spring showers. As always, if you don’t feel comfortable performing this task
yourself, or if you have health challenges, contact a professional.

spring. Now it is winter and you’re wondering how best to remove snow and ice
from your deck. We put together a few tips to help you out!
                                          1.
If possible, try removing the snow with a soft-bristle
push broom (This may not be possible with large snow accumulation).
2.
When shoveling your deck do not use a metal
shovel – Plastic is ok, rubber tipped is better.
3.
Shovel parallel to your deck boards – You will
minimize any potential chipping or scratching caused by your shovel.
4.
Do not attempt to chip or break ice from the top
– Instead, find the edge of the ice. Get your shovel underneath it if you can.
Then attempt to pull up on the ice pieces.
5.
If you are unable to find an edge to pull up from,
try using hot water to break it loose. Try again to pull up with the shovel.
6.
Dye-free calcium chloride is your best options
to prevent refreezing on your deck. If in doubt, you can contact the
manufacturer of your decking material and ask for their recommendations.
7.
Frequently brush your ice melt off your deck to
minimize scratching. If temperatures reach above freezing and are expected to
stay above freezing overnight, you can use a hose to give your deck a quick
winter wash.
Following these simple directions will help keep your new wood
or maintenance free deck in top shape and ready for spring.

If you are considering a heat lamp, they will
cost you on average from $100 - $1,000+ depending on the size of the space
you’re heating, what type of heater you choose, and whether it is mounted or
free-standing. Be prepared to budget for operating costs based on the type you
pick as well (gas vs electric).

          Fuel/power:

Heat lamps are available in electric, natural
gas or propane. Which option is best for you may depend on where you want to
use your heat lamp and how much space you need to heat. If you choose a natural
gas lamp, be aware that a professional should be used to install it in order to
prevent leaks. Propane is the most portable method of heating, but an effective
propane heater will require constant refilling and a storage location for the
extra propane tanks when not in use. An effective propane-fueled heater can
burn a 20 lb. tank of propane in as little as 6-8 hours. With an electric
heater, you’ll need to be sure you have a circuit to handle the power the
heater will need. You should also be aware that it may cause a significant
increase to your electric bill when being used.

BTU is short for British Thermal Unit.
Technically, one BTU can heat one pound of water by one-degree Fahrenheit. It’s
used to estimate heat output, kind of like horsepower is to engine output. Based
on this, you should then consider how hot you want your outdoor space to be
heated, and how much square footage you need to heat. The colder and bigger
your space is, the more BTU you will need. We recommend asking an expert to
help guide you, but we will also provide you with a guide below.

As their name notes, they are about 6’ tall and can
give out heat in a 20-foot
diameter. These models generally operate at 40,000 BTU and tend to give
the most heat to the widest area. They can use all three fuel options and
can also be portable or mounted to the ground.

           These
are not portable and are designed to be mounted on a wall or ceiling, and
usually use electric or gas. These are ideal if you love to grill all year
round and need a heat source above your grill, dinner table, or other
fixed location on your deck/patio. Depending on the size you need these
can provide you with 10,000 BTU of heat (or less), to over 30,000 BTU.

Let’s face it. When it comes to wood, it doesn’t last
forever. Here in the mid-west, we experience all four seasons and harsh weather
conditions. Our wood fences and decks often need a little TLC to hold up to the
elements. You may be wondering when the best time is to apply a fresh new stain
to your wood fence or deck.
First, let’s talk about when NOT to apply stain. Obviously,
you do not want to apply stain when heavy rain is expected, because much of
your hard work will be washed away with the rain. Additionally, wood that is
already damp, even if no further rain is expected will absorb less stain. This excludes most of the spring season since
rain is a constant threat to your project.
The summer can also be a bad time to apply stain. If not
working against the humidity, you will be working against the heat, causing
much of your stain to evaporate before penetrating deep enough into the wood.
Midwest winters contain the harshest conditions of them all.
Cold weather lengthens drying time, and temperatures below freezing prevent the
stain from penetrating at all. These factors combined with wind and excessive
moisture from sleet, snow, and freezing rain makes winter the worst season to
apply stain.
So what conditions are ideal to effective and long-lasting
stain? You will want to look for these 5 weather factors:
-Wind is minimal (to minimize the amount of flying debris
that hits your fence/deck)
    - It has not rained in the last couple of days and wind is
not expected for at least 2-4 days
    - It is cloudy, or your project is properly shaded
-It is above 50 degrees and not expected to drop below
freezing overnight
-It is below 90 degrees with low humidity
The time of year that you will find most of these conditions
present will probably be during mid-late fall or early spring (before the rainy
season hits). If you complete your project during a time when the weather is
ideal, your stain will turn out the best and last longer. Now, to choose your
stain!

Winter is around the corner and soon we will be ready to pull out the snow boots and shovels. Before that happens, take some time to pay your deck some preventative attention.

For wooden or maintenance free decks, now might be a good time for a quick wash with a hose or a power washer. This will make sure that your deck is ready for the spring, and if it has any problems you can address them before the first snowfall. If you have a wooden deck, now might be a good time for some waterproofing. This will help it endure our harsh winters.

If you have any patio furniture cushions out, give them a once-over before putting them away. Spot cleaning or a trip to the washing machine now will mean less work for you in the spring. Always make sure you store them once fully dry, never store damp or wet fabric as it may mold and mildew.

Inspect all shades. If you have a sun sail, make sure that the rivets or holes for the strings are secure and not ripping, inspect all strings for loose or fraying fabric. Now is a good time to replace or note any abnormalities before you need them again in the spring. For any other forms of shade in your yard, do the same and note any loose or broken parts. Knowing what you need to replace now will help you in the spring.

Inspect the areas around your deck and patio. By now, some plants will be losing fullness or are just about ready to be cleaned up for winter. This is the perfect time to see if you have any problems around your deck, yard or fence. Your local community of squirrels, racoons or other animals may have made a hole in your fence or property that you can now see. Covering or fixing gaps can help your pets stay safe and happy.

It’s easy to find ourselves cooped up all summer, either at home, work, or both!
Stop and enjoy the weather today. The cold will be here soon to replace our warm summer days and nights. Make it a point be in the moment: eat outside, sit on your deck, take walks, or just sit in the sun. Don’t forget your sunblock, but enjoy summer while
it’s here.

Summer = live music. Attending a summer festival is always fun but you can also
find plenty of live music all over Madison! We have such a wonderful night life in and around our city that you are sure to find local restaurant or summer market that will host a band or two. There is something about live music that is so enjoyable and relaxing,
especially during a warm summer night.

This can be as simple as a weekend getaway in your own town or a trip a new restaurant.
The key is to explore and try something new and get out of your regular routine. Variety is the spice of life and traveling as a tourist in your own town or a new city can give you a wonderful thrill of adventure and a new perspective.

           Use plants:

Grab a few planters and add some of these plants: Lavender, basil, marigolds, catnip,
peppermint, lemongrass and citronella (yes, you can plant this in your yard!). If you already have planters up, add them where there is space to your established garden. If you don’t, then you might want to consider using them around your deck and property.
Mosquitoes are attracted to the CO2 that our bodies put out, and these plants in addition to other tactics, should help you reach your goal of a pleasant summer gathering.

           Candles and oils:

Candles and oils do work but you have to be smart about how you use them. If you
are going to be using candles, oils, or open flame mosquito repellants remember that they only cover a small radius so plan for multiple sources around your yard or deck. They will also be affected by the wind so make sure you can move them around if the essence
is being blown away from your guests. If you are planning on using oil repellents on your body, make sure they are safe to do so. Always read the instructions and never assume they are safe on the skin. Most oils last about two hours, so remember to reapply.
If you are planning on having an open flame at your property make sure you have the hose close by just in case.

           Avoid bug zappers for mosquitoes:

Bug zappers work by killing any bug that is attracted to their light. Mosquitoes
however, are not attracted to the light but might be accidental casualties. If used, they will only kill about 4% of the mosquitos out at the time of use, and your actually may kill more beneficial insects than expected without making a dent in the mosquitos
at your party.

          Mosquito traps:

This kind of mosquito tactic is best used ahead of a party to asses the number of mosquitoes in your area, and then to use that information determine other tactics you should use. In other words, this is for those who are really serious about effectively working on reducing mosquitos on their property and want a way to measure effectiveness. Regardless of the trap you pick, you will have to replace or empty things like: nets, sticky boards and electric boards. The best way to know what you may need, is to assess your property. Take a walk
outside and think about the last few times you have been in your yard. Have the mosquitos been bad? If so where? Having more people in your yard will also attract more of them. Where will people gather, are there any still pools of water, like in bird feeders,
kiddy pools, kids toys, buckets and so on. You might be surprised with what you find, and you don’t want water sitting out as it is literally a mosquito breeding ground. Treat these areas, as well as any thick brush or tree lines, to make the biggest impact.
Your local hardware or lawn and garden store should have a variety of mosquito treating products for you to choose from.

Remember, while all your efforts will reduce the number of mosquitos at your party,
they will always fly in from a neighbor’s yard or other location. The most tested and proven method to keep them away is by using topical repellents. Repellents come in lotions and sprays, natural to deep woods strength. As long as you use them as directed,
you should have an enjoyable summer party.

Chicken Grilling Tips

Here are some quick tips to make your summer chicken grilling a bit easier.

The grill is a versatile device and can cook anything from whole chickens, to tenderloin,
to pizza, to fruit. You’re only limited by your imagination (okay, and the amount of fuel you have left in the tank). One food that’s often seen as tricky on the grill is chicken. It’s easy to under-cook, overcook, burn, or dry out compared to other meats.
Here are some quick tips to make your summer chicken grilling a bit easier.

When cooking chicken breasts, gently pound them to a uniform thickness. This
will help them cook evenly, and will help keep them from drying out as the thicker parts would otherwise take longer to cook.

When using wooden kabob skewers, soak them in water for about 30 minutes prior
to grilling. This will keep them from burning up. For foods that are tougher to skewer, use two skewers, slightly spaced apart. This also makes turning the skewers on the grill easier as the foods won’t be able to rotate around on the skewers. Be sure to cut
the chicken into similar size cubes to prevent some cooking faster than others.

You pounded the chicken breasts into a uniform thickness and they still came
off the grill dry? Try cooking boneless chicken thighs instead. These typically stay juicier longer than breasts and are usually a bit more tender.

Try to keep one side of the grill cooler than the other. This gives you a place
to move the food to in the case of severe flare-ups. You can also use this indirectly heated area to slow cook other foods, like veggies, that could burn if placed over the direct heat you use for the meats.

Finally, the marinade can really make the meal where chicken is concerned. Since
chicken on it’s own has a pretty mild flavor, the right kind of marinade will not only allow the chicken to become the central flavor of the dish, but they also go a long way to keeping the meat moist and tender.

A new season means new trends in decking. If you are looking to update your deck,
or if you are looking into getting a brand new deck, you may want to consider some of these ideas:

          1-Consider a curved deck design:

Rounded edges are a hot trend right now. Curves soften up any space and add a modern
twist. The key to this design? Composite decking. This product is very versatile, easy to work with and allows you to pick from a wide range of colors and styles while requiring less maintenance than a regular wood deck.

2-Wide deck rails that can double as drink rails.

If you have or want, friends and family over, you may want to consider wide rails
that can double as drink rails. This allows for more places for people to gather and to spend time with each other away from a table. The look is classic and will allow your guests to feel comfortable no matter where they go on your deck.

          3-Layers for functionality.

Your deck doesn't have to be just one level, or use just one straight set of stairs to get you from one point to another.
Adding levels can help you define multiple spaces and can add a gradual but seamless transition from one location to another. This can also help you use space that you never thought you had, or arrange your deck into functional spaces. The best part of adding
layers is that you don’t have to worry about one long row of stairs. You can break up the climb by incorporating multiple landing spaces.

4-Deck lighting solutions that are instinctual

Deck lighting has always been around but the new evolution is minimal and feels like it was always there and right were
you need it. Lighting features can be built in to the stairs, rails, or on the edge of a deck. You don’t have to worry about where you are walking. Not to mention that it sets a wonderful mood for parties and get togethers. But the best part is just enjoying
it on a warm summer night as you enjoy your yard. Lighting can really set a calm and peaceful mood that will help you enjoy your backyard.

Sunnier days are ahead and we need to be careful with how much time we spend in the sun. Too much sun exposure can cause heat exhaustion, which can cause headaches, dizziness, or irritability. A nice shaded area on your deck will be like an oasis in a hot sunny day. You can build a fast cabana using PVC pipe or wood and some curtains, or you can order a sun shade sail on

Get The Most Out Of Your Grass Seed This Spring #1

Spring is a great time to spread grass seed and fill out the sparse parts of your
lawn. But don’t just go dumping the seed willy-nilly. Grass seeds need some pampering and coaxing to grow their best. Here are some tips to make sure your seed takes:

When to seed: Once daytime temperatures are consistently between 65 and 75 degrees,
it should be time to seed. In addition to spring, you can also overseed your lawn again in the early fall as long as you use one of the species below.

Know your seeds, know their needs: Kentucky Bluegrass is probably the most popular
grass in the Midwest. It looks good, and it has good recoverability from adverse conditions. It is a bit high maintenence, however, requiring good fertilization, watering, and full sun. Perennial Ryegrass is also fairly high maintenance, but it’s a fast germinating
grass that can fill out a yard quickly. If you have a good amount of shade in your yard, Fescue is a good choice.

Watering: Initially, seeds should be watered often, about 3 times a day, but lightly.
Avoid puddles in the beginning. Once you see the seeds starting to establish themselves, you can water less frequently, but more heavily. Once fully established, your entire lawn should receive about an inch of water per week between rainfall and watering
combined.

Have patience: It can take up to 20 days for your seeds to germinate, and another
5 or more weeks to fully establish their root systems. Avoid excessive traffic in the seeded areas for best results.

Follow these tips and you’ll have a full, lush lawn in no time.

Deck season will be here before you know it, and you might occasionally find yourself
in the market for a bottle of wine. Picking wines can seem daunting, but it need not be if you follow a couple of simple rules. Keep these in mind, and you’ll pick a winner for any food-centric occasion:

          1) More expensive doesn’t mean better. While it’s true that it’s harder to find
a “bad” wine at a higher price point, much about wine quality and taste is subjective. In fact, when many people are given both expensive and inexpensive wines to taste and compare, without knowing which is which, most guess the prices incorrectly. $12-$20
is a perfect price range to find quality and value.

          2) We all know the sayings about wine getting better with age, but that’s actually
not true in most cases. In fact, most wines should be drunk within a few years of bottling. It’s perfectly fine and safe to look for vintages from 1-3 years ago. The exceptions here are wines that start out so robust and intense that time in the bottle will
balance their flavors, alcohol, and acidity. But even these wines will taste perfect with the right company and food!

          3) When in doubt, keep it simple. There are a variety of tried and true wine and
food pairings. Try pairing wines with foods from the same region. Having red sauce pasta? Buy a Chianti. Having steaks? Grab a California Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Here’s a quick chart for some common food pairings:

of Things is rapidly expanding into everything from thermostats to toasters. And it’s not all frivolous, some of these are genuinely useful, like getting an alert on your phone when the washer or dryer are done so you can remember to switch them out.

You’ve probably been hearing the phrase “smart home” quite a lot lately. The Internet
of Things is rapidly expanding into everything from thermostats to toasters. And it’s not all frivolous, some of these are genuinely useful, like getting an alert on your phone when the washer or dryer are done so you can remember to switch them out.

Since it’s winter, and exterior home improvements are probably out of the question,
why not take a look around the house and see where you can add some smart home conveniences? Ok, so maybe you don’t need a new washer or dryer right now, but you can add the conveniences of smart home devices in lots of ways. Here are just a few of the best
devices that popped up in the last year:

          Amazon Echo Show ($229):
This is the perfect kitchen smart device. Having your cookbooks and cooking videos up on the screen, or asking Alexa to set a timer or read the next part of the recipe to you because your hands have more egg-and-breadcrumb-coating than the chicken makes cooking
easier to manage. It also integrates with things like wifi baby monitors, smart thermostats, front door cameras, and much more, which extends its capabilities.

          Nest Thermostat E ($169):The
thermostat that kicked off the smart home industry is still one of the best in the game. In addition to programmable schedules and the ability to modify your home’s temp from your smartphone from anywhere, it also learns heating and cooling patterns in your
home to further optimize for efficiency. The Nest app also comes with some handy features like energy usage history and tips on improving your energy use.

          Smart Plugs ($50 - $150):
There are a variety of wifi connected smart plugs on the market that allow you to control the power to anything plugged into them from your phone or a remote. These are especially handy in older homes where retrofitting switches or lighting can be a major
job. Many of these smart plugs can also be scheduled so that your lights automatically turn on and off at specific times, which is handy when you’re away from home for extended periods of time.

The home of the future is available today and improving fast. Start integrating
these little conveniences, and pretty soon you’ll wonder how you ever went without them!

As the end of 2017 fast approaches, we wanted to thank everyone who has welcomed our new venture Madison Deck Builders into the community. We have a long history of working in the Madison and Dane County community through our sister store, Dane County Fence and Deck, and now that we have decided to expand we are happy to be able to do so here as well.

For our first blog and tip for the month, we would also like to talk about making an un-bucket list as this year finishes. An un-bucket list is a wonderful way to look back and reflect on all the positives in the past year. You start by making a list of your small and big accomplishments. From finishing a yard project to finally taking a long awaited vacation. Nothing is too small for your list. After all, it’s all about you and what you consider to be your accomplishments. An un-bucket list is also a wonderful way to sit with friends or family and remember the good times that 2017 has brought us. If you’re having a hard time thinking about items to add to your list, try looking back at your phone’s stored photos or your personal social media posts. They might hold treasured memories that you had not looked back on in a while.

We hope that this little exercise helps you usher in a new year with renewed goals and dreams. It’s not the destination that brings us the best memories, but the journey. Thank you for reading and we hope to catch you next month for our first blog of the year.
